CONTEST: Design a logo for Bosk's blog. I'll have a prize for the winner. (I'll find something. Like a banner promoting your site. How's that sound, Xar? Deadline: 11:59 PM, Sunday May 4th
Ok, now get ready for a really long post. I have three days to make up here. Solo Ensemble was fun, Dave and I did fairly well, with scores of 86, 87 and 91. We didn't place, but oh well. The choirs won first and second in their divisions; dunno how the solos went, I think Goose plays in 10 minutes or so. I'll break up the last couple of days, highlighting only the interesting events.
The Ride Up to Ellensburg was interesting... We stopped at a truck stop outside of The Dalles for a break. Very interesting place, hopefully the only one of its kind. If you buy 50 gallons of gas, they'll give you a coupon for a free shower! Also, they sell almost anything. What don't they sell? Think of something classy. They had a neon ashtray, a PS2, a train horn, and some old DVD's on the same shelf... now that's organization!
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, we come around a corner to find a police car blocking traffic. Odd, seeing as we haven't seen any signs of civilization for almost 50 miles. He directs onto a dirt road away from the main highway, due to an accident involving a tanker truck. I think we should have taken our chances with the tanker. A one-lane dirt and gravel road became a two-way highway. There was a truck in front of us, a sports car behind us, and apparently somewhere nearby was the charter bus carrying the choir. This "shortcut" lasted about 30 minutes, while we wound our way through a very rundown section of the Yakama Indian Reservation, sometimes completely buried in the cloud of dust. A stop at
Miner's for burgers in Yakama (Almost worth driving there just for the burger) was great though.
The Hotel was nice. Once we got over the apparent lack of sound-proofing between rooms (although it wasn't too bad, we could just hear other people's alarms going off sometimes) and the halogen light aimed into our window from the roof outside, it was great. Especially considering we didn't have to drive back and forth between Ellensburn and Yakama, and that the choir stayed in the Super 8 two blocks away. Highly reccomended.
Solo Ensemble was held at Central Washington University. Nice campus, but the parking sucks. I won't go into incriminating details, but lets just say that the $25 ticket for the no-parking zone wasn't too bad, especially since it gave us a free pass to keep the car there. (Although we did sorta worry about it getting towed or ticketed again!) We met up with Randy and the Skyview Choir, hung out with them for most of the day. We watched the choir's performances, yadda yadda yadda. You really don't care about this part, do you? I thought not. I'll skip it, but only because I'm getting tired of typing.
Later we drove David to Yakama, where we met his parents for dinner at
Outback Steakhouse. Surprisingly, this was my first time eating at an Outback Steakhouse, and I would go back. Really good food, I reccomend the chicken and ribs. We almost ran out of gas on the way back to Ellensburg, but we made it with a whole 11 miles to spare! This morning we headed back for home, in the driving rain and occasional
SNOW over the hills. I figured out how to use cruise control, and there's nothing like the feeling of passing a semi at over 70 mph. White-out dance tonight, I guess you can hear about that tomorrow.
Oh, one more thing. This was brought to my attention by a message on
Xar's site: my picture site is not complete. I have found temporary web-hosing elsewhere for some of my work, and since Tripod really sucks for pictures, I'm working on another solution. Probably something like the one used for the aviation pictures at the
Troop 14 website.
